The 2025 Select League season kicked off in style with Match Week 1 delivering goals, drama, and the promise of an exciting year ahead. Five matches took place across the KC metro, with three of them kicking off in the early 6 p.m. slot.
The headline clash saw newcomers Crown Villa host defending champions Woodland FC at St. Pius X High School in the KCAFF TV Match of the Week. However, due to unforeseen technical difficulties, the broadcast was shifted to Instagram Live, and the graphic package, without commentary, will be added later for rebroadcast on KCAFF TV.
On the field, the reigning champs wasted no time asserting their dominance. Woodland’s high press proved too much for the Select League debutants, forcing turnovers and creating constant pressure. The result? A commanding 4-0 win for the visitors, setting the tone for their title defense.
Another league debut saw Antioch Rangers, in their first-ever match host Southside FC at Staley High School. In contrast to the chaos at Crown Villa, this clash was defined by discipline and defensive solidity. Despite chances on both ends, neither side could break through in what would be the weekend's only draw, 2-2.
Over at Trailridge Middle School, Lenexa City began a new era under fresh ownership, but retained their coach from last season. They welcomed Northland FC for a high-scoring affair, but not the kind they'd hoped for. After falling behind 2-0 at the break, Lenexa’s defense collapsed in the second half. Northland ran riot in an 8-3 rout, with Tigran Topchian bagging four goals, earning him the league lead in the Golden Boot race after just one match.
The 7 p.m. kickoff brought more intensity. Home club Olathe United edged Liberty FC 2-1 in a closely contested match. Liberty looked sharp and much improved from last season, but the home side capitalized on key moments to secure all three points.
Closing out the evening was the much-anticipated Leawood Forest vs. Real Overland Park derby at Barstow School. In front of a shivering crowd, both teams showcased why they are among the league's most competitive sides. Tied 1-1 at halftime, Real Overland Park found the winner in the second half, escaping with a hard-earned 2-1 win in a match that could have gone either way.
With the first week in the books, Woodland FC looks as strong as ever, Northland and Real are flying high, and questions surround clubs like Lenexa and Crown Villa as they search for answers early. Week 2 promises even more fireworks in what is already shaping up to be a standout season.
